Classroom Use
What needs to be considered about Flickr when discussing cultural, ethical, and other societal issues?
Flickr is an outstanding tool to promote cultural awareness and diversity. Teachers and students will be able to find images from many different cultures and geographical areas. As mentioned before, images are an effective way of conveying a good deal of information efficiently. Many aspects of culture can be explored by looking at an image. The outward characteristics of a culture like clothing, housing, city design, food, and art can easily be demonstrated and analyzed. Subtle characteristics like family structure, facial expressions, and the proximity of interactions can be analyzed and discussed as well. On a micro-level, the cultures of the student body within the classroom can be explored as individual students share their families’ cultures through images.
Images can have a powerful impact and create clarity for the students when dealing with societal issues. I recently created a webquest on bullying. I retrieved several images from Flickr. The images I included created an emotional level to the project that I would not have achieved through words alone. I believe that most of us can still see several powerful images of many societal issues like war, inequality, and change. Flickr can aid the students and teachers in collecting and organizing found and created images to elevate any presentation or project dealing with important societal issues.
Flickr is a global website where people share their personal images. Teachers need to plan to address the potential problems when utilizing the internet and share ware. Copyright and property rights need to be explained and enforced by any teacher planning on using Flickr. Flickr has established ways to upload and share imagery that is not seen by the public. Privacy setting can be used to protect the students. But teachers must also teach the students to respect the rights of others as well.
